Classes halted after VRC student found dead in bed

NHLANGANO – Yesterday, lessons had to be halted at Nhlangano Vocational Rehabilita­tion Centre (VRC) after a student was found dead in his bed.

Sizo (21) was reportedly found dead by his roommate who noticed that he was too silent even for someone asleep, as he heard no breathing sounds.

Upon noticing that, the student rushed to report about Mkhonta’s situation to the institutio­n’s management who also came to check on him.

The management then called the Eswatini National Fire and Emergency Services (ENFES) who took Sizo to the hospital where he was certified dead.

VRC Manager Phinda Sihlongony­ane confirmed the incident mentioning that the student went to sleep the day before without showing any signs of ailments in any way. Sihlongony­ane

mentioned that they were aware that Mkhonta had some kind of sickness which he likened to epilepsy of which might have been the cause of his death. However, he was quick to add that he was not sure as Mkhonta had never revealed this to him it was just a layman’s observatio­n. The hospital was still to confirm the cause of Sizo’s death.

The manager said Sizowas doing his agricultur­e course at the school.

Principal Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security John Hlophe also confirmed to have received reports about the demise of the student. He said as a ministry they were very devastated by the death of Mkhonta as he had a future ahead of him after completing his lessons.

He passed his condolence­s to the student’s family, friends and colleagues.

Hlophe said the ministry would meet his family next week.
