New voting system

JOHANNESBURG - ANC Eastern Cape Provincial Chairperson Oscar Mabuyane has called for the urgent update of the party’s voting system at conferences. The current system has been criticised for creating delays. Mabuyane was re-elected as chairperson at the party’s provincial elective conference. “The renewal of systems must be done with speed. Our organisation is 110 years old, therefore, we should not be having challenges of holding conferences within the specified time,” he said. “We must, comrades, modernise our systems of capturing membership data and perfect our logistical management for conferences to avoid delays.”

KZN cop arrested

DURBAN - A woman died after her policeman son allegedly savagely assaulted her and locked her in her Clermont township house, west of Durban, over the weekend. KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza yesterday said the policeman was arrested. “It is alleged that a police officer stationed at KwaDabeka Community Service Centre badly assaulted his mother and locked her in the house at the weekend. The mother’s helper and little child who were in the house allegedly escaped through the window to plead for help from neighbours,” she said. Khoza said the woman, identified as Greta Xaba, allegedly suffered frequent assaults at the hands of her son.

Twenty years in jail

JOHANNESBURG - A 26-yearold man who raped a 12-year-old girl in 2016 was on Monday sentenced to 20 years in jail by the Olifantshoek Regional Court in Northern Cape. On August 18, 2016, Morris had, at knifepoint, accosted the victim and her three friends at a field in Olifantshoek and forced them to undress. The three friends fled and Mmusi raped the girl. The investigating officer assigned to the case, Const Pako Bele, of the Kathu family violence, child protection and sexual offences (FCS) unit, collected evidence including DNA.

NEW YORK - The International Monetary Fund’s Executive Board on Monday approved a three-year, US$456 million extended credit facility arrangement for Mozambique, with about US$91 million available for immediate disbursement, the fund said. The facility is the southeast African nation’s first programme since the global lender suspended support six years ago.

The IMF said the three-year arrangement will help support economic recovery and policies to reduce public debt and financing vulnerabilities, while creating space for public investments in human capital, climate adaptation and infrastructure. The fund said the programme would support a reform agenda centrered on establishing a sovereign wealth fund to manage the country’s liquefied natural gas wealth, mobilising tax revenue and strengthening public finances. “Mozambique has managed the COVID-19 pandemic relatively well, maintaining macroeconomic stability and reform momentum even as the country weathered a series of shocks, culminating with the effects of the war in Ukraine,” IMF Deputy Managing Director Bo Li said in a statement.
