Road training changed Siza’s life

M– Road training is one of the best ways to lose weight, keep fit and during the winter season, it’s best to do it safely and avoid exposing yourself to danger.

As we celebrate Siza Dlamini’s life transforma­tion, which came about after joining popular running team Zithande Athletics Club, his Coach Nsizwa Thwala shared important tips to help you to make sure that you do it in a safe environmen­t.

They say running in winter speeds up weight loss and today’s feature is a testament that once you share your goal with people who have a similar vision, you are guaranteed to get positive results and even start chasing bigger dreams.

Through consistenc­y, switching to discipline­d eating habits, you can be like Dlamini who managed to lose 22 kilogramme­s and visibly lost dimension in belly fat.

‘Mkhaba (pot belly) must fall’ is the slogan for the Zithande Athletics Club and it is now a reality for this veteran runner and school teacher, who rewrote his fate by adopting an active and healthy lifestyle.

BEFORE: This was in 2018 when Siza Dlamini joined Zithande Athletics Club. He had already started training. He was at heaviest weight of 87kg.

When did you start training and what was the motivation

behind?

“I started a long time ago but after I joined Zithande in 2018, my mindset towards road running took an upward spiral. My motivation was basically the health benefits that we were enjoying and I wanted more and more of that.”

What sort of lifestyle contribute­d to your weight gain?

“It was the type of food that I was eating; fatty foods, fizzy drinks, junk stuff and of course, the quantities and the frequency.”

What was your heaviest weight and how much weight have you lost so far?

“My heaviest weight was 87kg and now I am at 65kg.”

How often do you exercise?

“Due to the nature of my work and the distance travelled, I do strength and cardio exercises in the morning and run long distance with my team on Saturdays and about 20km on Sunday mornings before church.”

Do you follow a specific nutrition plan?

“Of course, mainly fruits, whole wheat, vegetables and rarely small quantities of starch. For tea, which I rarely take, it is honey and no sugar.”

How do you stay focused despite the challenges that you normally face in your healthy and fit kind of lifestyle?

“There are many struggles but the major one currently is the winter season as the early mornings are dark, so I do some workouts in the safety of my house.”

How has your life changed since you adopted the healthy and active lifestyle?

“I am a teacher by profession and losing the extra weight helped me to improve my quality of life and be mentally fit everyday considerin­g the nature of my work, as I am more active now.”
