The petition was finally delivered at Manzini Police RHQ around 6pm by a group of about 100 activists.

SNUS President Colani Maseko said after the police had dispersed them, most of them ran to SNAT Centre and afterwards, the police allowed them to leave the venue in groups of not more than two people.

He said as they left the venue, they communicated that they would gather in Manzini and go to the RHQ to deliver the petition. Indeed, he said they regrouped in Manzini and proceeded to the police, where they made a few speeches and handed over their petition.

The petition was addressed to the Manzini Regional Commissioner and it was titled; “Re: Thabani Nkomonye Inquest Report”. It was signed by the union’s president and Secretary General Wakhile Lukhele.

In the petition, they said as students of Eswatini from the various tertiary institutions organised under SNUS banner reject the Thabani Nkomonye inquest report. They also demanded an independent investigation/inquest by an independent body or person into the death of Nkomonye and all other comrades who died allegedly at the hands of the police.

“The police should desist from shooting at unarmed students who only seek to get justice for a fellow student and/or other emaSwati,” reads part of the petition.

Thereafter, they said as students of this country from their respective tertiary institutions, have since resolved that failure by the department to adhere to the above demands would leave them with no choice, but to use other means necessary to ensure that the death of Nkomonye and other emaSwati who died allegedly at the hands of the police was not in vain.

Again, efforts of getting a comment from Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati proved futile as her mobile phone was not available on MTN Eswatini network for the better part of yesterday afternoon. The last call was made at 7:37pm. 0
