Our country marred by huge inequalities

-

Madam,

)or many people in our beautiful country, the act of volunteering is sim ply unacceptable. ,n a world that is un predictable and money is often hard to come by, people would rather sit still than render their skills and expertise ‘for free’. ,n many ways, we watch our communities deteriorate and Mustify it with thoughts like, ‘but , don’t have the money or time to change things’ or ‘, have studied and worked so hard to not receive compensation’ and ‘, will help out once , get this new Mob’. 7he truth is, volunteering is not about working for free, it is about tapping into another side of you and dedicating your time to develop your surroundings, one small step at a time. ,t is important that we avoid being daunted when we think about volunteering.

CONTRIBUTION

7he problems in our country are so complex that we get demoralised and give up before even starting. 7o avoid getting caught up in these paralysing thoughts, remember that volunteerism is a team effort and no contribution is considered inferior to another. 6ome might have the time to visit their local high school and give insight on life lessons and career op tions; others might have the funds to fix a damaged roof. Volunteerism is not a show or a competition; it is much more than that. Volunteering, especially on a regular basis, is by no means any easy feat because let’s face it, working and not getting paid is difficult. Right? Well, wrong. Con trary to popular belief, volunteering has various benefits; the onus is on the individual to make the most of it.

now , understand my Tueen, be cause she knew how much it cost to keep that water running because she was footing the bill. 7hat’s what being adult is, learning not to waste as it all rests on you. , don’t think my grandmother genuinely had a problem with us running the water, it was the carelessness and unappreciative manner in which it was executed.

We shift our lens as we enter adult hood, its more than Must the mate rialistic, , think navigating through here takes intense emotional matu rity and a constant revision of your mistakes (to avoid them in future), coupled alongside self forgiveness for those mistakes and the ability to move, that is what makes for an adult. 7he things we don’t see. 7he resolve to carry on in this world of smoke and ash.

7he reality is maturity doesn’t come with age, ,’ve met some of the most mature year olds and the most immature year olds. ,’m not sure what influences maturity but life experiences do play a role. Regardless of which stage of adult ing you’re in, we were all lied to. Z N
