LOS ANGELES - Janet Jackson got a standing ovation as she arrived onstage at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night in Las Vegas.

The 56-year-old entertainer looked overwhelmed as she thanked the audience for their rapturous applause.

Janet took to the stage to present Mary J Blige with the Billboard Icon Award - but the crowd appeared to be more in awe of the iconic ‘Together Again’ singer. ‘The Black Cat’ singer looked effortlessly stylish at the event, wearing a black tie-inspired ensemble and top hat. Meanwhile, Mary 51, immediately thanked Janet and also called her an icon as she took to the stage for her big moment.

Since the award’s inauguration in 2011, past recipients include Neil Diamond, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion, Cher, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Garth Brooks, and pink.

‘My career has been such an incredible and unexpected journey that has included many turns into avenues I never could have imagined like acting, producing, launching businesses and now even my own music festival,’ Blige recently told Billboard.

‘Through it all, I always one way or another gravitated back to my first love, music. To be recognised in this way at this moment, with the Icon Award at the Billboard Music Awards, is an incredible honour and one that I am truly humbled by.’

In her career, Blige boasts BBMA wins total, nine of which were won when she dominated the 2006 award show. This year’s awards are based on the chart period of April 10, 2021 through March 26, 2022.

Billboard Music Awards finalists and winners are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay, and touring.

Since 1940, the Billboard Charts have been the go-to guide for ranking the popularity of artists, songs, and albums, and are the ultimate measure of success in music.
