Mhlanga appeared before Pigg’s Peak Magistrate Sakhele Hlophe, where he was not asked to plead but was advised that he had the right to seek legal representation.

A submission was made by the Crown counsel that Mhlanga should be remanded in custody until May 30, 2022.

Mhlanga requested that he should be granted bail as he was employed in Mbabane. However, it was also mentioned that the complainant was still admitted to the hospital.

The magistrate then asked if the court was mandated to deny bail if the complainant was still in hospital. The Crown counsel responded that the court was not compelled to deny bail.

Mhlanga was granted bail of E5 000.

He was warned to adhere to the bail conditions, including not communicating or interfering with the complainant or witnesses. He was further ordered to surrender his passport and to provide the investigating officer with particulars of where he resided.

Mhlanga was also told to report to the nearest police station every last Friday of the Month.

Just before taking his seat, Mhlanga raised his hand to signal that he had something important to ask. When the magistrate gave him the opportunity, he asked if he could be allowed to pay E2 000 bail.

The request was turned down.
