Man hit with brick on video robbery suspect

PIGG’S PEAK – The mystery surroundin­g the man who was assaulted, including being hit with a brick on the head, has been revealed.

The incident is said to have happened around Mahwalala in Mbabane, after the man was accused of robbery and later apprehende­d by angry residents. It is alleged that the man was also carrying a pistol that he had used to commit the robbery.

He is said to have been living around Mangwaneni in Pigg’s Peak before he left for Mbabane where he was eventually apprehende­d.

It is alleged that the residents accused him of robbing people while brandishin­g the pistol. He is said to have been overpowere­d during one of his robbery sprees. The pistol he used in the robberies was also found and confiscate­d by the police in Mbabane.

When angry residents caught up with him around Mahwalala, he was assaulted.

Tied

A 30-second video shows him tied to a burglar gate, while he appeared to be covered in blood all over his face and failing to sit up. Some of the residents are heard asking him questions. While others were posing questions to him, one of the residents is seen hitting him on the head with what appears to be a brick.

The man appears to struggle to sit up after being hit, but he eventually manages to do so before the video ends.

Chief Police Informatio­n and Communicat­ions

Officer Superinten­dent Phindile Vilakati confirmed that the assault happened in Mbabane, around Mahwalala. She also confirmed that the assaulted man was a suspect in an armed robbery and that a mob apprehende­d him.

She further confirmed that the suspect was also linked to the Corner Plaza heist that occurred last year.

Further, Vilakati revealed that the suspect had already appeared at the Mbabane Magistrate­s Court and that he was currently in prison where he was remanded.
