Šalulile misses out on M„esumaǯs record

-

PRETORIA – Mamelodi Sundown co-Coach Manqoba Mngqithi admits they tried their best to help Peter Shalulile break Collins Mbesuma’s scoring record.

Shalulile finished the 2021/2022 DStv Premiership season as the top scorer with 23 goals, falling two goals short of Mbesuma’s record of 25.

“It was very unfortunate, we had spoken about it to try and support him as much as we can, even if we were to get a penalty we were going to give it to him, but unfortunately that maybe caused a little bit of anxiety on ‘Kutu’ (Thabiso Kutumela).”

“Because he was trying to do the right thing, he could have easily scored but he tried maybe he should try to give it to Peter to increase the number of goals and we must accept and understand that in as much as he could have done better, the gesture was a very good gesture.

Mngqithi also gave thanks to everyone involved at the club after clinching a fifth straight league title.

“I think the boys have done very well, but I think this is the day where we need to thank everyone involved in the club, I think it is the right moment to thank the president and the chairman of the club and the Board of the club for the support they have given us throughout the season,” he added.

“We also thank the administrative staff in making sure that everything we needed was always provided timeously. We had a very bad breakout now of flu and they were there to support us.

“And to make sure we get the right medication at the 11th hour and to thank the yellow nation. These guys have supported us even when they could not come to the stadium, they were there.

“And last but not least, to thank my fellow technical members for everything that they have done for the team in making sure they support us and to thank the rest of the squad and the support staff, the kitchen staff, the groundsmen and everyone who helps us.

“The security at the gate and everyone involved at the club. I think it’s the right moment for me to say thank you very much.”
