The national team, Sihlangu had to spend the night at the Lomahasha Border Gate, as they failed to cross into Mozambique, where they were heading for a practice match. The move by the national team was against the will of the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) and the teams, as they had fixtures to honour yesterday under the MTN Premier League. Sihlangu’s preparations ahead of the 2023 AFCON Qualifiers had been kept under wraps by the Eswatini Football Association (EFA).

A source close to the matter said the team had to spend the night at the border, and they were only able to go through in the morning. “It was not a good journey for the team. They left the Lobamba Technical Centre in the afternoon and failed to make it to the border in time and had to spend the night there. The team was heading for an international friendly match against Mozambique,” said the source.

EFA Marketing and Communications Officer, Muzi Radebe, said he was not aware of the matter, as he was not part of the delegation. When asked further if he had not been communicating with the team while in Mozambique, he said he would only get the report upon their return. “There is no correspondence, we got so far form Mozambique and it was a practice match with no fans,” he said.

Sihlangu is in camp to prepare of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group B qualifiers two opening fixtures against Togo and Burkina Faso. They will first play Togo away on June 3 before hosting Burkina Faso in South Africa three days later. The national team hosts its home game away from home due to poor playing facilities in the country.
