Salary

They wondered why the parents were expected to pay the teacher’s salary, at a government school. “What do we pay taxes for?” asked one of the parents.

The parent said even some school committee members were divided on the issue such that one of them ended up resigning. The school’s newly-appointed Chairperson, Cebile Vilakati, was called, but she first said she was at a bank *Not real names and that she would be available after an hour. However, when she was called later, she said she was still busy before ending the call.

The school’s Head teacher, Ntokozo Shiba, when reached for comment, said he did not have the right to comment on behalf of the school as this was done through the regional educational officer’s (REO) office. However, he also said he would call back once he had informed the REO on the matter.

Thuli Langwenya, who is the Hhohho REO, said she was not aware of a new teacher being employed at the school. She said maybe the school was yet to inform her office. When she was asked if schools could hire teachers, she said she was not aware of schools being allowed to recruit teachers as this was done by the ministry.
