M(UBL)? – Who will be the last man standing in the University Basketball

It remains uncertain so far, there seemingly is no team that has proven the strongest in the self-sponsored basketball league. The league games were played on Thursday at the Multipurpose Hall (MPH), where big upsets were witnessed. Manzini Superstars, who have dominated the local basketball scene alongside Mbabane Jazz, were humbled to their second defeat by University of Eswatini (UNESWA) Alumni. The latter won 46-41.

The win helped them jump to the top spot, with five points after having won two of their games. In the opening league match played last week, Alumni

were victorious beating Mbabane Knicks 46-31. This meant they had not lost any game since the start of the league, while Superstars have suffered two defeats. They first lost to Zim Zim in the opening game with a 48-43 scoreline.

They have managed to secure a win against the young and inexperienced Uneswa Hawks who they beat 59-10.

In other interesting games, Zim Zim proved that they meant business after defeating Street Cred 42-36. UNESWA Hawks are still in search of their first win after they lost 66-8 to Mbabane Knicks. The League’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) Thando Mkhatshwa said the games were electrifying.

“Last night’s (Thursday) games were electrifying with teams fighting for the top position in the league. Games kicked off with Zim Zim against Street Cred, which was a tight one until Zim Zim broke away in the fourth quarter to win it,” Mkhatshwa said.

The PRO said the other highlight game was the second one of the evening between Alumni and Superstars.

“That game was a tight contest but Alumni managed to make buckets and get stops in the last seconds of the game to claim the win. The last game saw Mbabane Knicks face the Hawks, although it was a one-sided affair, the young talent from UNESWA is improving compared to when they began playing. This game saw Knicks taking the win over the young guys,” he said.

He said games would continue next week at the same venue.
