MBABANE – The Pink Ribbon Luncheon with Somizi scheduled for October 8, 2022 is aimed at bringing awareness on breast cancer, especially because internationally, October is known as Breast Cancer Month.
Secondly, the event’s objective is to get the conversation going and highlight the increase in cancer in Eswatini.
According to a statement from the organisers of the event: “Our population being a mere 1.2 million, we are number one in the world with cervical cancer and the statistics say that 220 people are diagnosed with cervical cancer yearly, and unfortunately half of those diagnosed die of cervical cancer.”
The statement stated that another objective of the Pink Ribbon Luncheon with Somizi was to have a build-up event towards the annual walk called ‘Brave the Breast Walk’ by Eswatini Breast and Cervical Cancer Network (EBCCN), which is set to take place on October 29, 2022 at Lobamba Technical Centre. This walk has been hosted annually for over 20 years.
Screening
“EBCCN has been doing extremely wonderful work of servicing all four regions of the country. They have a mobile clinic that offers free screening of breast and cervical cancer.
“Polished Events is doing pro bono work for EBCCN to assist them in raising funds so that their free services can reach as many citizens of Eswatini as possible as early detection is key with breast cancer; as a matter of fact, early detection is key with all cancers. Unfortunately, in the Kingdom of Eswatini there is 106 cancers that exist and cancer does not only affect adults but also children; so these conversations around cancer and our health need to happen as our Health is our Wealth,” reads the statement further. The Pink Ribbon Luncheon with Somizi is set to take place at Sharma House on October 8, 2022. Tickets cost E1 650.
