Chiefs eye Mthethwa
JOHANNESBURG - Sibongiseni Mthethwa has been identified by Kaizer Chiefs as one of the players the club will go for in the next transfer window. The Stellenbosch FC midfielder has been doing well for the past eight months, since his return to the top flight. He spent the first part of last season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship with Black Leopards. But since Stellies bought him, he has been a regular starter and was recently called into the Bafana Bafana side.
’Downs get CCL boost
PRETORIA- Mamelodi Sundowns will host both legs of their African Champions League second round tie against La Passe of the Seychelles at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, strengthening their runaway chances of advancing to the group phase of the continent’s top club competition for an eighth successive campaign. There is no suitable stadium on the Indian Ocean island, where renovations are still to be completed, and ‘home’ matches for Seychelles teams in continental competition over recent months have been hosted in nearby Mauritius.
Richards Bay on hunt
DURBAN - DStv Premiership newcomers Richards Bay will be eyeing another scalp when they take on AmaZulu in a KZN derby at the Moses Mabhida Stadium today. Kick-off is at 5pm. The Natal Rich Boyz have been the surprise package in the early stages of the new season after winning four of their opening eight matches. Sifiso Dladla’s side occupy third place and trail league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by five points with a game in hand.
Marumo edge Galaxy
NELSPRUIT - Marumo Gallants claimed a hard-fought 1-0 win away to TS Galaxy at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit yesterday evening, a result which moves them out of the red zone of the DStv Premiership. Bahlabane Ba Ntwa secured the victory – their first of the season – thanks to a first-half strike from Sede Dion. They moved up to 14th place on nine points and pushed Maritzburg United into 15th on goal difference. The Rockets are just one point and one place ahead of their vanquishers. Galaxy will be back in action on Saturday when they host Swallows FC, while Marumo will be away to Mamelodi Sundowns on October 19.
JOHANNESBURG - Friends and rivals have paid tribute to distance running icon Sam Tshabalala after it was confirmed the former elite athlete had died on Sunday at the age of 64.
Tshabalala, from Zamdela township near Sasolburg, made history in 1989 when he became the first black athlete to win the prestigious Comrades Marathon. His elite career was later derailed after he was involved in a car accident in 1991 which left him with long-term injuries.
A popular figure in the South African road running community, he continued to participate in the sport, though he was unable to return to his best. Tshabalala ran his last Comrades in 2002, closing out his career with 12 silver medals and one gold from the ultra-distance race.
