MBABANE – People with disabilities will soon be able to participate in any sport of their in the country.

This will come as a result of an initiative by Cheshire Homes Eswatini, which will engage and educate all sports associations on the basics and the role they can play in the development of disability sports in the country.

Disability sport is defined by Sports Development Organisation (SDO) as a sport designed for, or specifically practised by people with disabilities, but for Cheshire Homes, it is project aimed at making sporting codes inclusive of people with disabilities.

Cheshire Homes Communications Officer Phindile Mnisi confirmed that they would be holding workshops aimed at engaging and educating the over 25 sports associations in the country on the basics of disabilities and help the associations gain insight on working with people with disabilities in sports.

Project

For this project, Cheshire Homes has also partnered with Eswatini Paralympic Committee, an organisation that is presently overseeing disability sports in the country and the Federation of the Disabled in Swaziland (FODSWA).

These association’s workshops also seeks to help associations understand and improve their role in the development of disability sports while Cheshire also wants to work with the associations in incorporating disability sports in their existing action plans so to be inclusive, practical and relevant to people with disabilities.

At least 13 associations have been already invited for the first phase of the project, which will take place at Esibayeni Lodge in the period October 26-28 this year. Each association is expected to send two representatives to the workshop.
