M– CEO of the Eswatini Railways, Nixon Dlamini says that there are more local passenger trains in the pipeline.

Speaking to Eswatini News, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) pointed out that it was high time emaSwati were spoilt for choice on the mode of transport they wanted to use when travelling between the cities and towns.

“Eswatini Railways has aspiration­s of playing a part in achieving the First World status in Eswatini.

In the past, people had numerous alternativ­es on modes of transport and now it is time to catch up with other developed countries,” said Dlamini.

Eswatini Railways premises at Mpaka in the Lubombo Region. A passenger train will arrive today from the Republic of Mozambique.

The CEO stated that there were programmes and projects already in place, it was only a matter of time before they were implemente­d. Yesterday Eswatini experience­d the first passenger train, connecting the cities of Maputo, in Mozambique and Matsapha.

This connection is the result of a bilateral agreement signed by the government­s of both countries, within the scope of the implementa­tion of the Southern African Developmen­t Community (SADC) free trade zone.

The Director of Communicat­ion and Image of CFM-Sul, Adélio Dias, informed this publicatio­n that the cost of the ticket will be 1 250 Meticais, on a route that will depart from Maputo central station to Matsapha, Saturdays at 6am, and in the opposite direction on Sundays, arriving in the Mozambican capital at 11 am.

In terms of logistics, Adélio Dias said that the executive management of CFM-Sul was ready to host this experience, which would be taking place for the first time in the history of Mozambique, adding that the career included a catering service.

“The company will also introduce, starting next Monday, the circulatio­n of railcars in the transporti­ng of passengers in the central area, connecting the cities of Beira and Dondo, in Sofala,” stressed Dias.

The route will also be operated by a railcar, with the capacity to transport 600 passengers and will connect the two cities three times a day.

The CFM has invested, in recent times, in the acquisitio­n of new rolling stock, including self-propelled vehicles.

This will be good news to the Ministry of Tourism and also the more than 10 000 Mozambican nationals who have been in Eswatini after their country experience­d a civil war in the 70s.
