MBABANE – Sibusiso ‘MTV’ Sifundza has called upon relevant authorities to consider making a law that would allow regional representation of persons with disability in the country.

Sifundza, who used the phrase ‘as people with disabilities’ throughout his address, said it was high time for the country to consider the election of at least four persons with disabilities to represent the organisation in the four regions.

He stated that inclusion of persons with disabilities would make their life easier since they understood the situation on the ground.

“Just as women are elected to form 30 per cent in Parliament, may the country consider the election of persons with disabilities to represent their own regionally, “he said.

Sifundza also pleaded with EBC to consider continuous education so that constituents would be well equipped about the national elections. He said the education at short notice was not enough to help voters.

He asked EBC if there was a way to compel the constituency team to avail itself at the tinkhundla centres after elections. This, he said, was to avoid a situation where the team was nowhere to be found during the course of their term in office. He made an example that some were not available on their mobile phones, resulting in the frustration of the people.

Sifundza also asked if there was a way to ensure that all Bills were taken to the people before they were passed into laws. He said taking the Bills to the people could play a vital role in avoiding individual wishes, which he said were then made laws that affected the people.

In response, the EBC appreciated the desire for continuous education. Khetsiwe Vilakati, who led the EBC team, stated that the commission considered the continuous civic voter education. However, he said they had financial challenges. Vilakati encouraged the constituents to vote for people from all sectors of society, including the persons with disabilities.
