MBABANE – With the calendar already available, the majority of cyclists are looking forward to the first race of the year.

The calendar, which was released by the Eswatini Cycling Association (ECA), has the Big Bend Mountain Bike (MTB) Challenge as the first official race of the year. Sisekelo High School, which will host the event as a fund raiser, hopes cyclists will come in numbers to support the cause. Registration will be open until March 24, 2023, which will be a day before the race.

All cyclists should be aware of the weather conditions in Big Bend as it is generally humid most of the time. For riders coming from the Highveld, it is worth knowing that training in a humid environment will help them in having an enjoyable and more tireless ride. Sisekelo has successfully hosted such events at least three times in the last five years.

Distances

The event has three different distances, being the

10km, 30km and the 60km.The latter is the longest of the day. The distances have different entrance fees ranging between E80 and E150. The Mhlosinga Nature Reserve will accommodate the chosen routes for the day, where riders will enjoy scenic routes.

The races are to commence at 6am; however, those who will be making their way from other areas but Big Bend have options of accommodation that will bring them closer to the event. Mhlosinga Nature Reserve has full accommodating cabins as well as camping grounds. Those interested can liaise with Mhlosinga Nature Reserve on 268 7630 0526 or email at wildearthservices@gmail.com.

Meanwhile, the first cycling event of the year was a safety awareness ride over a week ago.
