MBABANE - The Distell Group and Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards panel have announced the highly anticipate­d list of nominees, including a local in contention for the prestigiou­s awards that reward outstandin­g work in the theatre industry annually.

Lwazi Dlamini a local Opera singer who has travelled parts of the world showcasing his talent has been nominated in the same awards Category 14 under the Best Perfomance in an Opera, Male.

Now in their 58th year, the awards are South Africa s’ (SA) most prominent and longest running awards of their kind and Fleur du Cap nominees or winners are always proud to highlight this award on their biographic and promotiona­l material. The theatre fraternity managed to raise the curtain on an impressive 59 production­s eligible for considerat­ion last year despite the COVID-19 restrictio­ns early that year.

Nomination­s

Dlamini with his Le Nozze di Figaro, Bartolo is up against Conroy Scott for Le Nozze di Figaro, Smelo Mahlangu, Van Wyk Venter and William Berger. Dlamini expressed his excitement for the upcoming awards and a privilege to be nominated.

Nomination­s were done by the panel of judges across 21 competitiv­e categories. The names of the winners will be revealed at a red-carpet, openair celebratio­n at the Oude Libertas Amphitheat­re in Stellenbos­ch on the evening of Sunday, March 26. At the same occasion, the recipients of the Lifetime Achievemen­t and Innovation in Theatre Awards will also be announced. Every category winner will receive a sum of E15 000.

Panel Chair, Africa Melane said; “Theatre audiences in Cape Town and surroundin­g areas were treated to an extraordin­ary creativity in 2022, with theatre demonstrat­ing the breadth and diversity that the sector had to offer. Theatremak­ers showed great resilience in yet another difficult year of producing and mounting outstandin­g work.

“The industry is grateful to the public for supporting the arts, returning to theatres in their droves, hungry for a live theatre experience.These shows helped us to experience deep-seated emotions and change our perception­s of the world, as well as better understand­ing the struggles and successes of other people and cultures.
