Pigg’s Peak folk horrified by crimes

PIGG’S PEAK – The community of Pigg’s Peak is wide alert following a growing trend of serious crimes, that include car jackings, armed robberies, burglaries and murder.

This has seen as a growing trend of communitie­s organising themselves to form neighbourh­ood watch schemes.

A senior police officers dealing with serious crime in Pigg’s Peak said the increasing incidents of crime has necessitat­ed a change in attitude by all stakeholde­rs, including residents and law enforcers.

On January 16, 2023, thugs reportedly broke into the house of a Pakistan national and stole a laptop, four cellphones and cash amounting to E10 000. In total, the thugs reportedly went away with items valued at E27 000.

The Pakistan man, operating a business around town claimed that he was assaulted and injured during the robbery, which occurred at around 3am.

Further, it has was reported that there were two more break-in attempts at two houses in the same area but police were able to promptly respond and stop the attempted robberies.

In a different incident, thugs are said to have broken into a doctor’s, flat at the Glen Township while he was asleep. ‘‘They heavily assaulted him before stealing his valuables, including a television set, clothing items and cash,” said the source.

Kidnap

They attempted to kidnap him but changed their minds, afterwhich they only left with the loot.

Meanwhile, violent fights are also on the increase as two people were stabbed on the first weekend of March in town, during fights which started in bars.

One of the two stabbed individual­s was certified dead upon arrival in hospital, while the other was said to be still in critical condition in the same hospital. According to sources who witnessed the stabbing of the deceased individual, a fight ensued in one of the bars around town. The fight is said to have been taken out of the bar as two people were seen chasing each other.

“One drew a knife and started chasing the other. The one who was chased with the knife ran away towards one of the butcheries near the bus rank, where he is employed. Upon arrival at the butchery, where there are also shops nearby, he then allegedly drew a knife to then stab his assailant to death,” said a source.

Meanwhile, the previous day, a bar patron was also stabbed in a fight that ensued, while enjoying alcohol beverages. He was said to be admitted to hospital with serious injuries.

At a recent meeting at the Glen Township Hhohho Regional Crime Prevention Coordinato­r Veli Mbata, advised that communitie­s should use the Regional Developmen­t Fund (RDF) for community projects to assist ex-convicts to start businesses, as they were most implicated in Pigg’s Peak crimes.
