Psychologist for Wanderers stars

- BY MENGAMELI MABUZA

MBABANE – Just like there’s always time for pain, there’s also time for healing.

The adage remains true for Manzini Wanderers players, who will be attending counselling sessions with psychologists to address the situation that the players have been in since the start of the season. The hub giants have endured a bad spell since the start of the season and the team’s Management Committee Chairman, Berger Nxumalo revealed that the team was going to organise a psychologist, who would talk to all the Wanderers players.

“We are happy with the three week break, which will make us put our house in order. We are doing our best as a club to make all our players see a psychologist so that the players can be in a better mind-set when the league returns after the FIFA break. We have noticed as the management of the club that our players are not okay mentality, with the current situation that has been happening in the club and the players not getting salaries.

“The welfare of the players is important to us besides playing football .We want to get them a psychologist to talk to them, especially because the team has not been doing well this season. The psychologist will help change their mind-set. We believe doing this will help us, especially because there is the frustration of not having money among the players, which we are currently working on as a club. Many of the players are bread winners for their families and the past months have taken a big toll on them.”

The down to earth Nxumalo further said this was also going to benefit the team going into then last seven rounds of games in the tough MTN Premier League. A sport psychologist is a professional who uses his knowledge and skills to optimise the performance and well-being of athletes, at individual and collective levels. He works with athletes in synergy with the technical staff. In a soccer club, the sport psychologist analyses the various dynamics inherent in the competition (pre-game, game, post-game). Psychological intervention aims, therefore, to improve the management of anxiety and the various emotions and stress of performance in order to enhance attention, perception and concentration skills of an individual, a department of a whole team.

Kaizer Chiefs recently took their player Siyabonga Ngezane to a psychologist after being hounded by the club’s supporters following his loss of form. Zwane said that Ngezane and other Chiefs players would receive professional help in dealing with the difficult times they were going through.

The maroon and white ensemble are currently 12th in the MTN Premier League, having lost 14 of their 19 games so far this season and they next have a league assignment against Madlenya, when the league returns early next month.
