MANZINI - The concerned contractors have taken the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to court over the appointment of CIC Board members.

This was revealed by a member of the contractors’ Normalisation Committee, Sabelo Nhleko, during their meeting, which was aimed at giving the members feedback on how far they had gone with their tasks and mapping a way forward.

Nhleko said after learning that the Chairperson of the national executive committee (NEC), which was elected into office in 2019 and ousted in October 2022 (Ruben Msibi) had submitted names of people to represent them on the Board, without their knowledge, they approached the minister. He said they made it clear that the names that were submitted were not nominated by the contractors, which meant that procedure and the constitution were flouted.

Nominate

Therefore, he said they were asked to meet and nominate candidates, which they did, and submitted to the ministry. However, he said the names which were submitted by the chairperson were endorsed and gazetted as members of the CIC Board.

He added that when they tried to apply for a court interdict, which would interdict the appointment of the people who were chosen by the chairperson, they found that the minister had already issued the gazette, which meant that the application had been overtaken by events. However, Nhleko said they had taken the matter to court over the legality of the appointment of the members in question. He said to the court, they presented why they said procedure and the constitution were flouted in the appointment of the Board members in question.
