ERU to conduct junior coaches’ workshop
MBABANE – The Eswatini Rugby Union (ERU) is in the quest to rapidly grow the game in the country.
They will today hold a junior coaches workshop at Manzini Caritas.
ERU Communications Manager Phumlani Gumedze said the workshop would be conducted by Steve Reynolds, who is a World Rugby qualified educator and has been working with the union for several years now. “Steve Reynolds has been holistically involved in developing rugby in the country through education and training.
“The workshop is meant to equip the young troops with the necessary skills that are needed as they will be working with young talent. “The goal of the union is to increase international participation, that means we must teach the right skills as early as possible and that will help us to go out and compete instead of adding numbers,” Gamedze said.
The communications manager mentioned that the 15 junior coaches who would attend the workshop would be deployed in various schools in the country where they would be expected to teach young children the necessary basic skills which are important in the game.
“The junior coaches will be reporting to Phasika Dlamini, who is a development coach and the head of women rugby development.
“This will also be the first phase of the workshop which will be mainly focused on the theory part of the game; the second phase which is the practical part will follow soon.

“Once both phases are completed, the union will decide when will be the next workshops which will be taking the coaches to the next higher level (Level I),” Gumedze added. Eswatini’s rugby national team Sizeze, recently visited Botswana, where they were defeated 3-111 by the Botswana-based side, Vultures in Gaborone in a first test match which was played last month.
