King, Queen of Belgium in historic visit to UWC

JOHANNESBU­RG - Despite the recent exit of its Gauteng provincial chairperso­n Bongani Baloyi and firing five councillor­s, ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba said the party is going from ‘strength to strength’ in the province.

WESTERN CAPE - Their Majesties King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgian people paid a historic visit to the University of the Western Cape on Saturday.

University of the Western Cape (UWC) and Belgian universiti­es have long-standing relationsh­ips dating back decades. The university’s former Rector Professor Jakes Gerwel studied at the Vrije Universite­it Brussel in the 1970s.

The royal couple spent time with students of the Digital Inclusion and Social Innovation project.

Speaking to TimesLIVE, Mashaba said despite the recent turmoil within the party, membership growth had not been dented.

He said the party had launched three branches in Tshwane and Soweto in the past week.

“ActionSA is growing from strength to strength, no doubt about that. We have had new positive outcomes in the recent weeks.”

With five councillor­s fired in Tshwane in a few months, Mashaba said he had no regrets about the party’s decision to terminate membership of the councillor­s.
