MBABANE – The Eswatini Golf Union (ESGU) will tomorrow elect new office bearers in a special meeting at Ezulwini Golf and Country Club.
New leadership is expected to replace the interim committee, which has been in office since November last year. The elections were originally due to be held during the union’s annual general meeting held about a month ago but were postponed by mutual consent.
The union confirmed the latest developments through a statement copied to this publication.
The postponement was an amicable resolution by the members in their quest to align with the new constitution, which was adopted at the recent annual general meeting.
According to the ESGU’s new constitution, nominations for executive committee positions shall be proposed and seconded by club captains or representatives.
Nomination
“The secretary general shall issue nomination forms to all clubs and special groups four weeks before the due date and returned to the secretary general seven days before the general meeting. If no nominations are thus received, then further and final nominations from those present at the annual general meeting will be accepted. Any such nominations shall require acceptance by the nominated party,” reads an extract from the new constitution.
Interim Secretary General Sifiso Dhlamini urged all the ESGU members and affiliates to attend Friday’s meeting without fail, so that they may elect capable men and women to take the organisation forward.
“It is high time that the governance of golf is taken to higher standards, and this requires deliberate and careful election of determined and visionary administrators. We urge all our members to exercise their right of voting into office a committee that will best serve their interests,” he said.
Stressed
Dhlamini stressed that serving in the ESGU, like any other voluntary work, required selfless and highly-determined professionals. He said the expectations were high on the ESGU to invest its intellect and resources on promoting golf at grassroots level to demystify the notion that it was a sport for the elite.
The outgoing interim committee is headed by Manzini businessman Jacques Potgieter, while Moses Masilela and Fisiwe Vilane serve as the Vice President and Treasurer, respectively.
Also forming part of the five-member interim team is Albert Mhlanga in his capacity as the immediate past president of the previous committee.
The positions to be filled this Friday include that of president, vice president, treasurer, secretary general and three committee members. There will also be the immediate past president.
INTERIM COMMITTEE MEMBERS:
● President: Jacques Potgieter
● Vice President: Moses Masilela
● Secretary: Sifiso Dhlamini
● Treasurer: Fisiwe Vilane
