MBABANE - Aptly described as a ‘couch potato’, Senanile Khumalo was once the quintessen­tial sedentary person, living a life of inactivity.

That is, until she decided to take charge of her health and wellbeing, and embarked on a journey of fitness and transforma­tion.

Now, she is a certified ‘road warrior’, having taken up running as a means of improving her physical and mental health. Previously weighing 91kg, Khumalo has successful­ly shed an impressive 21kg, now proudly maintainin­g a weight of 70kg.

Reflecting on her weight gain, she acknowledg­es that consuming processed foods and indulging in late-night eating habits contribute­d to her struggles.

However, her newfound commitment­s to daily walks, targeting 6 000 steps, and occasional skipping rope exercises have reinvigora­ted her journey towards a healthier lifestyle.

Adhering to a plant-based diet, with occasional inclusion of white meat, she has also made water her beverage, abstaining from juices and sodas. Now, let us delve into her story through a series of questions and answers:

When did you start your lifestyle change and what was the motivation behind it?

“I started my plant-based diet journey on April 1, 2023 with a strong determinat­ion to improve my health.”

What was your weight then compared to now?

“I previously weighed 91kg, but I have successful­ly shed 21kg and now maintain a healthy weight of 70kg.”

What sort of lifestyle contribute­d to your weight gain?

“I attribute my weight gain to a lifestyle of consuming processed foods and late-night eating, coupled with lack of physical activity.”

What kind you do? of exercises do

“I incorporat­e daily walks, aiming to achieve 6 000 steps a day, and occasional­ly include skipping rope exercises.”

Do you stick to a specific nutrition programme?

“Yes, I adhere to a plant-based diet, occasional­ly including white meat. I primarily hydrate with water, avoiding juices or sodas.”

What challenges do you encounter in maintainin­g your new lifestyle, and how do you handle them?

“Initially, giving up meat for two months was challengin­g for me. However, with time, it became easier and I now rarely feel hungry, maintainin­g my healthy eating habits.”

How has your life improved and how do you impact people, especially women in your circle or community?

“I feel fitter, healthier and more confident since adopting my new lifestyle. People around me have noticed the positive changes in my body and demeanour. I eagerly share my healthy eating journey, inspiring others, especially women, to prioritize their well-being.”

What are your weight and fitness goals within a certain time frame? How challengin­g will it be to achieve those goals?

“Having achieved my weight goals, I now focus on sculpting my waistline and achieving a sleeker, more toned stomach. With my commitment to a plant-based lifestyle, I am confident that reaching these goals will be more attainable.”

What advice can you offer to others facing weight challenges, but lacking the courage to start exercising and make it a lifestyle?

“I emphasise the importance of identifyin­g one’s ‘why’ - the reason behind the desire to lose weight or improve health. I encourage individual­s to constantly remind themselves of their purpose, as it serves as a powerful motivator during challengin­g times.”

What is your motivation­al slogan?

“Eat healthy and feel happy.” This simple mantra highlights the profound impact that nourishing our bodies can have on our overall well-being, inspiring others to embrace a healthier lifestyle.”
