MBABANE – Former Mbabane Highlanders striker Menzi ‘Flying Ghost’ Sibiya says that players who achieved legendary status in the country should be honoured and celebrated while they are still living.
The Inkunzi Emnyama legend made this statement during Friday’s emotional memorial service of legendary Bongani ‘Ndezi’ Masangane held at the Prince Mfanyana Hall at Manzini Central High School.
“I firmly believe that it is high time for the legends in our country to be honoured and recognised for their contributions. These players have proudly represented our country both domestically and internationally and they deserve to be celebrated for their achievements. I believe that our country’s legends should be appreciated and applauded while they are still alive to experience the gratitude and admiration they have earned. It is pointless to sing their praises only after they have passed away; instead, let us give them the recognition they deserve while they can still savour the joy and satisfaction of knowing that their efforts have been acknowledged and valued,” he said. The former Royal Leopard forward went on to share memories of the departed legend. “Mgababa was an outstanding player on the soccer field and I had the privilege of giving him that nickname. At first, he was not fond of it, but he eventually came to accept and embrace it. It became one of the many names by which he was known and recognised. I will forever remember my dear brother, and together with my fellow Highlanders legends, we will do everything in our power to ensure that his children do not suffer financially while we are still alive,” added.
The memorial was attended by over 300 soccer lovers from across the country, including Manzini deputy Mayor Wesley Dlamini, representatives from the Eswatini Football Association (EFA), and legends from Mbabane Highlanders such as Sifiso ‘Barnes’ Mkhulisi, Mxolisi ‘Nana’’ Dlamini, Richard ‘Zidan’ Anderson and Sipho ‘City’ Sibandze.
