MBABANE – This past Wednesday, the Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) donated security gear worth E164 000 to the Kwaluseni community police. This is part of EEC’s initiative to fight against copper theft. The items donated include 10 safety boots, reflectors, whistles and four walkie-talkies with a radius of 10 kilometres and 16 channels. The channels will ensure that each Kwaluseni community has its own channel for communicating. EEC General Manager of Support Services Bheki Motsa said: “Due to copper theft, the company loses about one million in three months annually.”

Motsa added that as a company they have since engaged community police in fighting against copper theft. Motsa pleaded with the community police to take good care of the gear by ensuring that they use it for its intended purpose. Motsa said that there are other means the company is working on to gradually shift from copper, but the process is still in its infancy stage. Therefore, he said once the process was complete, they would surely let the public know. The donation is after an outcry from the Kwaluseni community police, of insufficient working gear. The donation is part of EEC’s Corporate Social Responsibility.

Kwaluseni Constituency Chairperson Mthunzi Dlamini applauded EEC for being faithful in its promise in giving out the donations. Dlamini said they understand the severity of cooper theft, that it does not affect his constituency only, but the issue is a worldwide problem. Dlamini assured that they would take good care of the gear. He then saluted the community police for working tirelessly in fighting against copper theft. Dlamini further pleaded on behalf of the community police to make sure that there is no root of evil that comes between the community police by being part of those who steal copper. As Dlamini was smiling he also said that they are delighted about their relationship with EEC and they are hoping for many better days. Present at the handover ceremony was EEC’s general manager of support services, head of security, the constituency’s chairperson, chiefdom councillor and the community police.
