-

The 2022/23 Ethiopian Women’s league one horse race came to an end with three times defending champions Ethiopia Negedbank claiming the crown for consecutive four seasons after 2-0 victory over Mechal. Losa Abera and team mate Aregash Kalsa finished joint top scorer. Powered this season by goals from former Ethiopian international Losa Abera and rising star Aregash Kalsa and top performances from the midfield that boasts the likes of Birtukan G/kristos, Senayet Bogale and Medina Awol, Negedbank also had a rock-solid defense along with the league’s top goal keeper Tarikua Bergena who got away with a record 16 clean sheets.

Street wise Berhanu Gizaw at the helm and signing the best of talents every single season, Negedbank not only managed a third successive title win but fully dominated the 13 clubs’ league. Nineteen wins, four draws and a single defeat, “The Purples” defended the title with 61 points. Though the Men’s team is bottom of the table since the start of the season, Ethio-electric is compensated by the Women’s team that finished second behind Negedbank. The former Diredawa men’s team Coach Meseret Manni tried everything to snatch away the trophy. But having lesser quality squad and number of seasoned players, Electric finished runner-up just nine points behind with 52 points from 16 wins, 4 draws and 4 defeats. Hawassa finished third with 51 points while Nefas-silk sub city relegated to the lower division.

Negedbank skipper Losa Abera once again took home the season’s top scorer award for the fourth successive year. This time she shared the coveted award with team mate Aregash Kalsa bagging 23 goals each.
