HORROR start to the New Year

Public urged on importance of being safe on our roads at all times

- Naisa Koroi

Two people died in separate accidents on our roads yesterday despite the constant reminders by the Police and Land Transport Authority against speeding and reckless driving. Speeding is again the prime suspect that’s led to the deaths of Alumita Tupou Silimaibau Hedman and Mohammed Arif Khan. We are in to the 6th day of the new year, and the two deaths again raise serious questions about the inexcusable standards of our driving here.

Two people died in separate accidents yesterday, marking a horror start to the New Year on our roads. They died a couple of hours apart on the Queens Highway. Dead are 25-year-old Alumita Tupou Silimaibau Hedman and Mohammed Arif Khan, 24. Both died at the scene. Mrs Hedman, a mother of three, died when the minibus she was travelling in veered off the road at Lobau, near Navua, and collided with a FEA post. In Nawai, between Nadi and Sigatoka, designated by LTA as a black spot, Mr Khan died after the rental car he was driving collided head-on with a bus.

A Police report said he lost control of the car which veered onto the opposite lane.

Police are again urging members of the public about the importance of being safe while on our roads at all times

Police director Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mahesh Mishra had released some damning statistics which show that:

During Tatarovi, a joint operation between the Police and Lands Transport Authority (LTA) between November 23, 2015, and January 2, 2016, served 6962 Traffic Infringement Notices.

Speeding offence was the highest compared to other 10 offences as it recorded 3799.
