Terratrek, acclaimed as Fiji’s only self-drive guided tour that travels the mountains at the back of Pacific Harbour, opened in 2011. It was the brainchild of Mark Spurling along with his two business partners.

The three had seen similar activities overseas and noticed that many of the waterbased activities were restricted in windy and sometimes wet weather, “So prior to our opening there was a gap in the market for an activity like ours that is just as good in the rain as it is the sunshine and doesn’t get affected by the wind,” Mr Spurling said.

As his business partners left soon after Terratrek opened, Mr Spurling has been managing the business alone yet has been able to take it to new heights. A big achievement for the company has been becoming a finalist in the ANZ Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards 2015 in the Tour and Transport Operators category.

This was the first time for their nomination and Mr Spurling said it was a great surprise and an honour for them to be amongst some of the biggest names in the Fijian tourism sector. “This is especially when you consider how relatively new our business is,” he said. The biggest tourism awards of Fiji will be held on February 19 at the Denarau Convention Centre.

Nomination

Mr Spurling believes Terratrek’s nomination is based on innovation and the fact they offer a unique product. “There are quite a few sea and river-based activities but less of our type of self drive tour,” he said. “We also focus on the Eco tourism side which is becoming increasingly popular with our overseas guests.

“The recent introduction of our electric buggy has been very well received by this side of our market. “Our marketing campaigns and joint promotions with companies like McDonald’s and Fiji Airways for example have also helped give us a high profile in the local market.” As for the importance of such awards, Mr Spurling said: “I think everyone likes to be recognised for their contribution in this manner.

“It is already a great accolade to be short listed amongst the finest in our field. Additionally I am sure it will help promote our company further in Fiji and on the world stage.”

Tourism industry

Mr Spurling believes at present, the Fijian tourism industry is relatively buoyant and stable.

But, he feels we have to pay attention to our competitors in other countries.

“It is important that the whole offer remains attractive from the accommodation side to the attractions available,” he said.

“I also feel that staying affordable is of paramount importance particularly with the new higher tourism taxes being introduced.”
