Rape case goes to High Court

The case of two men charged with rape and assault of a woman was yesterday transferre­d to Lautoka High Court by Lautoka Magistrate Raramasi Salakabou. Avinesh Prasad, 27, is charged with two counts of assault causing bodily harm and one count of rape while the other accused, Nischal Chand, 37, is charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm and one count of rape. Police Prosecutor, Mun Sami Chetty told Magistrate Salakabou that their offences were indictable and serious. He further told court that the case was of public interest. Magistrate Salakabou has remanded both men in police custody. They will appear at the High Court in Lautoka on September 23, where they can make their bail applicatio­n.

It is alleged that on September 7, both Prasad and Chand went drinking in a Lautoka nightclub where they met the victim and took her to Lomolomo beach, Lautoka, where the incident allegedly took place. Edited by Nemani Delaibatik­i
