Carjacking accused appears in court

A suspect who was allegedly involved in a carjacking incident in Lautoka last Thursday appeared in the Lautoka Magistrate­s Court yesterday. Aselai Waqanivalu, 28, unemployed of Ravouvou Street, in Lautoka is charged with one count of aggravated robbery and three counts of theft. He was arrested by Police on Monday. Magistrate Raramasi Salakubou referred the case to the High Court, citing it as an indictable offence. The case was adjourned to October 14 for mention at the Lautoka High Court. Businessma­n Imtiaz Shaukat Ali, 40, his wife Shahina Nazmeen Hussein, 25, and their two children were victims of an attack as they parked at the Hari Lal Investment­s shop at Kashmir in Lautoka around 7.30pm. The men drove off with the couple’s Toyota Prado, which was later found abandoned at Saru.
