Labasa thrashed Suva 3-0 in the Vodafone Premier League match at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori yesterday. Labasa coach/manager Ravinesh Chand fielded a mixture of young and senior players. “We lost a lot of players during the transfer window so we decided to field our Under-20 players and they showed that they can win games for Labasa,” Chand said. “The performanc­e is a wake-up call to the senior players to step up their game. “Before coming into the game, I told the boys that the win was important. “We were patient and took advantage of opportunit­ies. “Since we only had three players on the bench we won’t be making changes to the team to play Rewa on Sunday.” Meanwhile, Suva coach Gurjit Singh acknowledg­ed that it was a good a game. “It was a good game and Labasa was the better side.” Labasa will play their second game against Rewa at Ratu Cakobau Park at 4pm today.

What happened?

Labasa had the early advantage applying pressure on Suva’s defence, few shots at goal by Christophe­r Wasasala. Labasa’s Ratu Anare put the visiting team ahead in the 20th minute. Halftime: Suva 0-1 Labasa Labasa’s Akimi Ralulu extended the lead in the 50th minute, 2-0. Suva’s attempt to make a comeback proved difficult as players failed to find their form.

Pita Rabo had the opportunit­y to close the gap for Suva but the ball was deflected by a Labasa defender. In the 74th minute, newcomer Shamal Lal scored the third goal catching Emori Ragata off guard, 3-0. Big Play: Labasa played with purpose and controlled the game. Star turn: Shamal Lal impressed with his first goal.
