Savings for big celebration will now go towards rebuilding home
Plans for a big Christmas celebration for the Kumar family in Lovu, Lautoka, were burnt to ashes after a fire destroyed their home on Wednesday. Lalit Kumar said their three-bedroom home was engulfed in flames around 7:30am on Wednesday. “We had saved money for Christmas but now we have to use that money on rebuilding, these ruins is Christmas for us,” he said. “One of my relatives had bought stationery for my six children, which was consumed by the flames.” Mr Kumar said only a few of his belongings were saved from the flames. around 7:05am on Wednesday. “I rushed towards their house enquiring if they had lit firewood to make breakfast, all of them quickly rushed out,” Ms Wati said. “Eight of them were at home at the time of the fire, six were children.” Ms Wati said the fire crew arrived in 10 minutes, but it was too late because the fire had spread quickly. “In the 10 minutes the house got completely destroyed by the flames,” she said. According to the National Fire Authority, investigations were underway to determine the cause of the fire. The Kumar family are now taking shelter at their in-laws house located near their home. Mr Kumar said they were also receiving some help from families. They are also planning to raise some money to rebuild their home.
