Police Officers Reminded to Honour Profession
Brigadier-General Qiliho said he expects his new batch of Police constables to deliver the desired outcome.
Commissioner of Police Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho has reiterated the need for all Police officers to honour and take pride in the policing profession. He made the statement during the closing of the Constable Qualifying Course at the Fiji Police Academy in Nasova yesterday afternoon. “There is great power that comes with the uniform you and I wear, and with it come the equally massive opportunity to abuse it. That is where you need to draw the line and conduct your work according to the laws that govern us at all times,” he said.
Brigadier-General Qiliho said the life of a Police officer is challenging as well as demanding. “As we are just days away from celebrating Christmas and welcoming a New Year, we will not be able to enjoy the same luxuries as everyone else by relaxing and enjoying the festivities, but will instead be required to service I expect from each and every one of you. I will need you to uphold your life of service with honesty, integrity and the highest level of professionalism.” He said reports of his own officers conducting their work outside the ambits of the law would infuriate him as he does not expect his officers to be caught on the wrong side of the law. “I have given my assurances that I will stand up for my officers who have been subjected to complaints if they have done the right thing, however also know that I will not hesitate to have you removed if you are going to be dishonest with your work”. “Every day I place my trust on every one of you with the knowledge that you are doing the right things at the right time”.
Brigadier-General Qiliho said he expected his new batch of Police Constables to deliver the desired outcomes. “We are not picking names out of a hat to see who should come and attend these courses, but we are carefully analysing and assessing those who we deem to be able to physically provide us the return of our investment once they leave the Academy, and this is what I also expect from you,” he said. “The expectations that are there for us to deliver every day are immense and we are not in profession where we should expect a pat on the back every time we do something good so if you get an acknowledgment, great, if you don’t, do not linger on why, and keep working. Your work will speak for itself ”.
In the spirit of Christmas the head of the Fiji Police Force made one request of his officers. “Christmas is a time for giving, and as I give you this gift of graduating so you are able to grow within the institution, the only gift I require from you, is that of your loyalty,” he said.
