Martintar 7s ready
Organisers of the 4th FWCC Martintar 7s tournament are overwhelmed with the response from top rugby 7s clubs around the country, who have confirmed their participation in the two-day event.
With the closing date for registration set for Friday, only a few spots are left as organisers are looking at having 40 teams for the tournament.
“Unlike the past three tournaments the response from the top teams this year have been encouraging and we are optimistic that rugby fans will be treated to quality sevens action,” said tournament official Timoci Waqaniburotu.
He also indicated that giant killers, First Light Taveuni, Can Do Generation and Yasawa Newnet have all registered.
“They will take on the likes of Army, Police, Eagle Warriors and Saunaka who have also registered as they aim to dethrone last year’s winner Wardens Gold and grab the $5000 top prize money. “Majority of the teams that have registered so far are from Nadroga, Nadi, Lautoka and a team from Tavua. Also Mosi and Duavata Youth 7s Gladiators from the Nadi highlands have registered.” Waqaniburotu said as usual they are working hard in trying to put together a well-organised tournament for the players to enjoy and showcase their skills to impress Vodafone Fijian 7s head coach Gareth Baber. There will be eight women’s teams confirmed for the tournament. Waqaniburotu said the winner gets $1000 while the runners-up pocket $500. He said the tournament will be officially launched at the Nasereci Church ground in Namaka, Nadi on Saturday at 11am. The two-day tournament will be on April 28-29 at Prince Charles Park in Nadi.
