Spurs Hold On to Beat Man United

-

Goals from Victor Wanyama and Harry Kane earned Tottenham victory over Manchester United in their final game at White Hart Lane.

Spurs plan to have their new stadium, built on the same site, ready for the 2018-19 campaign and will play their home matches at Wembley next season.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side left their current ground, where they have spent 118 years, on a high by staying unbeaten there this season and securing second spot in the Premier League. Wanyama got Spurs off to the best possible start with a header five minutes in and Kane doubled their lead early in the second half, flicking home from a Christian Eriksen free-kick.

Captain Wayne Rooney gave United hope of a recovery when he poked in from Anthony Martial’s low cross, but they were unable to spoil the leaving party. Defeat means Jose Mourinho’s men cannot now finish in the top four.

They can still qualify for the Champions League if they win the Europa League, but Mourinho will have to settle for fifth or sixth place in his first season at the club.

RONALDO KEEPS REAL ON COURSE Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice for Real Madrid as they took another step towards the La Liga title with a 4-1 victory over Sevilla.

Real led through Nacho’s controversial free-kick before Ronaldo pounced on a rebound to double their lead.

Stevan Jovetic replied after the break, but Ronaldo’s sensational second strike, his 401st for Real Madrid, and Toni Kroos’ late goal sealed victory. Real Madrid stay in second place behind Barcelona who beat Las Palmas 4-1. Reigning champions Barcelona, who beat Las Palmas 4-1 on Sunday, keep hold of top spot courtesy of their head-to-head advantage. But Real have a game in hand and need four points from their final two matches to lift their first title since 2012. The home side found themselves in front after 10 minutes courtesy of Nacho’s quick-fire free-kick.

When Marco Asensio was fouled outside the box, referee Umdiano Mallenco awarded the free-kick and with the Sevilla defenders still remonstrating, Nacho seized the initiative striking the ball into an unguarded net.

But Ronaldo will take the plaudits, scoring his 400th and 401st goals for Real Madrid in just 391 appearances, and drawing level with Jimmy Greaves on 366 as the all-time top-scorer in the top five European leagues. The 32-year-old’s tap-in from six yards was one of the easier of his goals but his second - a strike from a tricky angle just inside the box - matched the occasion.

Sevilla had their chances in the first half - Stevan Jovetic twice hit the woodwork before forcing goalkeeper Keylor Navas into a topclass diving save.

Former Manchester City striker Jovetic pulled one back for the visitors with a fabulous finish minutes after the break.

But Zinedine Zidane’s side held off the nerves and will now play their game in hand at Celta Vigo on Wednesday. Despite having won just three of their last 11 matches, Sevilla still secured fourth place and a spot in the Champions League play-off next season as Villarreal were held at home to Deportivo La Coruna.

Results: Las Palmas 1-4 Barcelona, Alaves 3-1 Celta Vigo, Ath Bilbao 1-1 Leganes, Eibar 0-1 Sporting Gijon, Real Betis 1-1 Atl Madrid, Real Sociedad 2-2 Malaga, Villarreal 0-0 Deportivo La Corufia.

JUVENTUS MISS CHANCE TO SEAL TITLE

Juventus missed the chance to seal their sixth consecutive Serie A title as they lost to second-placed Roma 3-1. They remain four points clear of the capital side with two games remaining and will wrap up the title if they beat Crotone at home next Sunday.

Before then, they face Lazio in Wednesday’s Coppa Italia final. Juve were ahead at Roma through Mario Lemina, but Daniele de Rossi, Stephan El Shaarawy and Radja Nainggolan kept Roma’s slim hopes alive.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side only needed a point to secure a record sixth league title in a row and looked in good shape to do it when Lemina tapped home Gonzalo Higuain’s cross.

But De Rossi levelled from the rebound when Gianluigi Buffon parried Kostas Manolas’ effort and El Shaarawy’s deflected shot put Roma ahead. Nainggolan smashed in a third on the bounce and Juve rarely looked like coming back from that.

Juventus are still likely to win the title and will have the chance to win it in front of their own fans against struggling Crotone on Sunday. They could actually be champions on Saturday if Roma lose at Chievo, and third-placed Napoli do not beat Fiorentina at home.

Results: Inter Milan 1-2 Sassuolo, Torino 0-5 Napoli, Roma 3-1 Juventus, Bologna 3-1 Pescara, Cagliari 3-2 Empoli, Crotone 1- 0 Udinese, Palermo 1-0 Genoa, Sampdoria 1-1 Chievo. -BCC

FEYENOORD WIN DUTCH TITLE

Feyenoord won their first Dutch title since 1999 thanks to captain Dirk Kuyt’s hat-trick in their win over Heracles Almelo on the final day. Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side needed to win, with Ajax one point behind them, and nerves were settled when 36-year-old Kuyt pounced on a defensive mistake to score the opener after 38 seconds. He headed in his second in the 12th minute and scored a penalty late on before Peter van Ooijen’s consolation. Ajax won 3-1 at Willem II. Their manager Peter Bosz fielded the youngest starting XI in Eredivisie history for the game, with an average age of 20 years and 139 days. Captain Davy Klaassen, at the age of 24, was the only player over 21 starting. But goals from Kasper Dolberg, Davinson Sanchez and Klaassen proved to be in vain for their title hopes.

The Amsterdam club’s next game is the Europa League final against Manchester United on Wednesday, May 24.

Results: Feyenoord 3-1 Heracles Al, ADO Den Haag 4-1 Excelsior, AZ Alkmaar 2-3 FC Utrecht, FC Twente 3-5 Groningen, Go Ahead Eagles 1-3 Sparta Rotterdam, PSV Eindhoven 4-1 PEC Zwolle, sc Heerenveen 0-2 N.E.C, Vitesse 3-0 Rhoda JC Kerkrade, Willem Two 1-3 Ajax. -BBC
