Within the next four days the province of Rewa will start planting more than a thousand trees to commemorate World Environment and Oceans Day. While launching the event at the Rewa Provincial Council Office yesterday, Roko Tui Dreketi, Ro Teimumu Kepa urged the people to keep their environment clean and safe from pollution.

Rewa, she added was also home to the scalloped hammerhead shark.

Ro Teimumu also declared June 5 to 8 every year as clean-up campaign days for the province.

She said they would try and establish disposal systems in all the villages in the province. Ro Teimumu said they had taken the lead to start creating environmental awareness and hoped to be a leading example to the other provinces.

According to a research team from the University of the South Pacific, Rewa has the largest breeding place for scalloped hammerhead shark around the world.

Ro Teimumu said they have declared the breeding places for scalloped hammerhead sharks as marine protected areas.

She said fisheries officers would be deployed to monitor the protected areas.

Ro Teimumu requested the people to refrain from fishing in these areas.

A common issue, she said was when pups were used as fishing baits.

Ro Teimumu said protecting marine life was part of the indigenous culture.
