Nadi Youth Club has taken the lead role in the west in cleaning up the Wailoaloa beach which is considered to be one of the most popular and littered beaches in Nadi.

Club president and founder Herleen Emily Kumar has challenged youths in the west to do the same within their vicinity while marking World Environment and Ocean Day last weekend. “These rubbish along the beaches pollute our marine resources leading to ocean issues such as coral bleaching,” Herleen said. The Nadi youths were assisted by the Nadi Town Council and the Namaka Police Force.

Herleen called on all the youths to never stop fighting and never stop striving for better things. “In a society where youths are categorised as future leaders of tomorrow, let’s empower ourselves and make Fiji a better place to live in.

“Be bold for a change and be proud of your identity as true Fijians,” she said.

She added that our nation taking part in COP23 and co-hosting Ocean Conference with Sweden was a bold move by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

“If our leaders are tackling ocean issues then as youths and future economic drivers of tomorrow we need to take action and join the fight against climate change. “Our clean up may seem small in front of the public, however, for us as rising youths of tomorrow, it is a big movement that we have undertaken, to save our ocean. “We cannot go along pointing fingers at each other for the damage we have already done to Mother Nature, but we can work together as one and make a difference in our society”.

The club is registered under the Ministry of Youths and Sports and was formed last month. The majority of the NYC members are from Sangam SKM College, Nadi and their ages ranged from 17 to 20.
