Japan’s partnership with USP based on mutual commitment
The Embassy of Japan in Fiji First Secretary, Shinichi Tamamitsu gave a presentation on the general facts on Japan, followed by a brief question and answer session at the University of the South Pacific School of Social Sciences on Tuesday, August 1. The information session on Japan was part of an East Asian history course, taught by lecturer Ryota Nishino.
Mr Tamamitsu spoke on a range of topics from Japanese art, craft, culture and tradition, and demonstrated several traditional Japanese toys and dolls.
Japan shares a long partnership with the university, based on mutual commitment. Japan has been providing development assistance to USP in many areas and in the recent years a major assistance includes funding for the construction of the Japan-Pacific Information & Communication Technology Multipurpose Theatre on Laucala Campus.
Japan has supported the Kizuna and the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) Exchange Programmes since 2012. Kizuna’s mission is to build a future for our community through the education, empowerment and engagement of the next generation.
Each year these programmes send approximately 150 USP students along with other youths from the wider Pacific and East Asia regions on two-week visit to Japan. These programmes are implemented by Japan to cultivate better understanding between the youths of Japan, the Pacific region and other countries, in order to help create a more peaceful, tolerant and prosperous world simply because our youths are our future. Those attending the information exchange session expressed their appreciation of the event. USP students in particular, shared their excitement on the upcoming JENESEYS 2017 Programme, which will approximately run from November 2017 to March 2018.
Application dates and other details for the JENESYS 2017 Programme will be widely publicised on the USP Website and respective media. Source: Embassy of Japan and the University of the South Pacific
