Police Reward Keshwan’s Bravery
Constable apprehends offender in life threatening situation; experience life changing, he adds.
Police Constable Krishan Keshwan’s bravery in an incident that nearly cost him his life was recognised yesterday during the Fiji Police Force medal parade at Nasova, Suva.
The 29-year-old from Lautoka received a special award from Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.
312 current and retired Police officers received medals for their services to the Fiji Police Force. Constable Keshwan said the incident happened last November while he was based at the Criminal Investigation Department in Valelevu, Nasinu.
Recalling the event on that day, Constable Keshwan said they had received a report of a robbery at a supermarket in Nasole, Nasinu. When he and a fellow Police officer arrived at the supermarket they noticed that the offender was still inside.
While standing at the supermarket entrance Constable Keshwan said he saw the offender walking out with the cash register. “The offender was alone, so I con- fronted him. We had a scuffle but then I managed to grab the cash register away from him,” he said. “The offender ran back inside the supermarket and grabbed a cane knife. I managed to save myself with the first two swings, but the third landed behind my left ear.” Constable Keshwan said he was blessed that the incident did not claim his life.
“It has made me stronger. I take this experience as a blessing from the Lord because I am still alive, anything could have happened on that day,” he said. Constable Keshwan’s immediate action resulted in the recovery of stolen property despite sustaining injuries during the attack.
“To be honest, being a detective from the CID branch, it’s the best feeling when you have the offender right in front of you because we spend most of our time investigating the offender. When you have the offender right in front of you, you are willing to do anything to get hold of the offender,” Constable Keshwan said.
Joining the Fiji Police Force was always a dream for Constable Keshwan.
“Ever since growing up in Lautoka, attending Natabua High School being part of the cadets, it has been my inspiration to be part of the Police Force,” he said.
