TWO OFFICERS ON ASSAULT CHARGES, 1 JUVENILE FOR BURGLARY, THEFT

The following data is authorised for release by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutio­ns (ODPP) and relates to the number of formal indictment­s (Informatio­n) filed in the High Courts of Fiji by the Director of Public Prosecutio­ns throughout the month.

This data is confined to incidents of serious crimes other than sexual violence offences which are recorded and published separately. This data also includes offences committed by police officers.

There were 20 people charged with a total of 16 counts of separate incidents in September.

The offences were aggravated robbery (2), aggravated burglary (4), theft (4), arson (2), assault causing actual bodily harm (1), act with intent to cause grievous harm (1), careless driving (1) and criminal intimidati­on (1). Of the 20 people charged, two were police officers. One police officer was charged with one count of assault causing actual bodily harm while another police officer was charged with one count of careless driving.

One juvenile was also charged with aggravated burglary and theft offences. There were 13 victims of these separate offences.

Cash, household items, laptops, mobile phones and office supplies were stolen during the alleged aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary offences. The alleged offences were home invasions, office break-ins and street muggings. The amounts ranged from $60 cash to over $6,000 worth of assorted items.

There were two incidents of arson where the accused persons allegedly set fire to properties in their separate villages.

There was one incident where a man allegedly stabbed a female after a night out. He was charged with a count of act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

One man was charged for criminally intimidati­ng a female whom he allegedly raped. (NB: The offence of rape was recorded separately).
