Former Vodafone Fiji Bati skipper Wes Naiqama believes a torrid battle awaits them in Saturday’s Battle of the Bati at the ANZ Stadium, Suva.

Speaking to SUNsports last night, Naiqama who is coaching the Australian Fijians said they’re eager to complete the puzzle in determining the final squad for the Rugby League World Cup, which kicks-off on October 27.

“A tight race of only 8 to 9 spots left, it will bring out the best from everyone on both teams which in return will be a fantastic game for those that are going to be there to watch,” he said.

“Boys pushing for a spot, obviously it’s a dream for everyone especially for the local boys as well, to represent their country on the world stage. They’ve been preparing pretty well for it.”

The Australian Fijians are led by former Melbourne Storm and Canberra Raiders winger Sisa Waqa. Waqa said he’s glad to be back home and is looking forward to the challenge against the Fiji Residents. He is backed by NRL players of Eloni Vunakece and Ben Nakubuwai.

Naiqama said he has heard that the Fiji Residents trial was held with a lot of talented players named. “We’ve only managed to get into two sessions when we were in Sydney. When we are here we are looking at getting another two or three sessions. We’re expecting a fantastic game and I’m sure the boys are excited and are up for it.” Naiqama said it was great to be at home, after finishing his career with the London Broncos. “Listening to the body thinking last year would be my last, I’ve been back in Australia, and have gone back to Newcastle,” he said.

“I have always wanted to be involved in the game in some capacity so when the opportunity came up to take the Australian Fijians I didn’t think twice about it. It’s a fantastic stepping stone for myself in regards to coaching on local level and international as well. I’m just grateful for the opportunity.” Meanwhile, Bati coach Mick Potter jets in tomorrow and after the match on Saturday the 24-member squad will be announced.
