SAFETY OF NURSES A PRIORITY: AKBAR

- Rosi Doviverata Managing Editor Digital rosi.doviverata@fijisun.com.fj

In Fiji people think the Government is the answer to all the misery. People are so dependent on seeking help from others but not preparing themselves for when times are hard.

It is a world first for nurses in Fiji to be asking for free transport to be provided by the Government whence they ought to have taken measures to make their own arrangements. Come to Australia or NZ as a nurse and ask free transport.

You know what you will be told. If you want to work you gotta find your way to work and back and not waiting for your employer to arrange transport when you knock off.

It is sheer madness to expect provision of transport back home for nurses in Fiji.

I think the entire world of nurses better start thinking of coming to Fiji to work.

Crazy world we live in.

“Ensuring that all nursing staff are transported safely to their homes.” this is a great mind soother but let’s wait and see if it’s not one more of their psychological panadol reliever of the mind.

Nothing to do with providing free transportation but everything to do with prolonged promises to relieve nurses minds after a hectic and busy day of work. Another type of bait and switch

Before making decisions on this, one needs to look at all essential services and not only nursing.

My take on this is someone in the essential services category was required to work beyond normal hours then they should be entitled to transportation back home. Secondly when public transportation is not available at end of shift then essential workers should be transported back home.

The emphasis here is essential workers and not only one particular category.
