O’Conor Calls On All Sectors To Raise Cancer Awareness
All sectors need to come together, collaborate, raise awareness and collect funds to fight against cancer. Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services Alex O’ Conor made the statement while launching the Pinktober breast cancer awareness programme yesterday at the University of the South Pacific (USP), Lautoka Campus.
He said to accomplish cancer awareness, a public-private approach to tackling the disease was essential. He also said the purpose of Pinktober was to raise awareness about women’s health, encourage early screenings, and educate all Fijians about the pressing need to fight cancer at local level.
“Your individual participation is crucial to the cause,” Mr O’Conor said at the launch.
“I would like to encourage you all to visit your nearest health facility for more information and early detection.
“There needs to be more sharing of information, encouraging and understanding.
“Early detection is important, rather than leaving it too late any detection of a lump or sign; make the effort to visit your nearest medical facility. Through communication, you may save a life of a mother, a sister, a best friend, a wife.”
He also revealed that according to a study by the World Health Organisation (WHO) 58 per cent of deaths caused by cancer occurred in less developed countries like Fiji. “The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is dedicated to helping every Fijian detected with cancer get treatment as quickly as possible,” he said.
The USP Lautoka Campus has been hosting the Pinktober morning tea the past two years. Acting Campus director, Siniva Laupepa thanked everyone for attending the event aimed at raising money for a worthy cause.
