Stand Up, Combat Climate Change: Student
Year Eight student Aralaini Vata of Rishikul Primary School said Climate Change was real and we need to stand up to combat this issue.
“I’m here to advocate on climate change because I know it’s something that is real and is happening right now,” Ms vata said. “Climate change is a serious environmental issue we are facing not only in Fiji but worldwide.” Aralaini was speaking yesterday during the Nasinu Town Council Environment Open Day at Valelevu Multipurpose court.
She said human being were responsible in combating this issue. “We students should be educated a lot about Climate change and possible solution to be taken,” she said.
“I may be one of the future leaders of this beloved country, and the exhibition I see today teaches me a lot of new things about climate change and the solution to it.” Some causes of climate change she mentioned was burning and dumping rubbish carelessly and cutting down of trees.
“The carelessness of us human beings is what causing climate change,” Aralaini said.
She thanked Nasinu Town Council for organising the event as it was an eye opener for her.
Her school teacher Rishni Sharma said one the topics they taught in school was Climate Change. Ms Sharma said the students were taught on the 3Rs which are Recycle, Reuse and Reduce. “We have been teaching our children about Climate Change and the effects it has on the environment,” she said.
“We should do something now before it’s too late to start.” Ms Sharma said Government and other stake holders should keep raising awareness and how to combat Climate Change. Ministry of Environment Project co-ordinator, Semi Qamese, while officiating at the open day said Climate Change was a grave threat to the environment, humans and infrastructures with serious challenges to all our towns and cities in Fiji. “Urbanisation is happening at an impressive speed and adapting to climate in inevitable,” Mr Qamase said.
