Galoa, Serua native Mikaele Ravalawa is determined to make his country proud when he dons the Overseas Bati jumper against the Fiji Residents in today’s Vodafone Battle of the Bati clash.

The 19-year-old was born and bred in his village and he never dreamt that one day he would secure an overseas contract and later go for a spot to play for his country.

Ravalawa went to Australia last year and joined the Canberra Raiders development side.

“I was just running around the village before I went to participate in a sevens rugby tournament in Samoa where I was scouted by the Canberra Raiders selectors,” he said.

“So I moved to Australia last year and it was a proud moment for me and my family. I’m happy to be here and play for the Overseas Bati.

“This is the first time for me to play in the Battle of the Bati and I’m looking forward to it and I’m excited.”

Ravalawa has been named to play on the wing.

He acknowledged the support of his family towards his career. “I dedicate this to my parents my dad Apakuki Saisai and my mother Laite Nai and my four siblings,” Ravalawa added.

He is the top choice for the centre position and head coach Wes Naiqama is impressed with his performance.

“This means so much to Mika and the rest of the boys they are hungry for that spot in the Rugby League World Cup and we just have to put up a great performance.

“The boys are in good shape,” he said.
