Nukutubu Declared Violence Free
DR KOROIVUETA SAID: WE ALL NEED TO WORK TOGETHER TO STOP VIOLENCE FROM HAPPENING IN OUR VILLAGES
The Permanent Secretary for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Dr Josefa Koroivueta, said we all needed to work together to stop violence against our women and children. Dr Koroivueta was speaking during the official launching of the Declaration of Zero Tolerance Violence Free Community at Nukutubu Village in Rewa yesterday.
“I believe that we all need to work together to stop violence from happening in our villages.”
He said violence against our women and children was a serious issue and shouldn’t be taken lightly by our community. “A research carried out by our ministry from 2010 to 2011 stated that 72 per cent of our women and girls have been abused in their homes, and 13 per cent of our pregnant women were abused as well.
“We should not hesitate to report our neighbours who are abusive to their spouses and children. We should tell people through our actions that we do not condone violence against women and children.
“We all need to say no to violence against women and children in our society, and that violence against women and children is everybody’s responsibility.” “Our Government is working hard to combat this issue,” he said. The Zero Tolerance Violence Free Community was one of the programmes established by Government in 2009.
Dr Koroivueta said Nukutubu was the first village in the province of Rewa to be declared a Zero Tolerance Violence Free Community.
He urged the different religious leaders in the village to preach that our women and children need to be loved and cared for.
