points to note:

■ It is important to always take about 2-3 minutes to plan your composition before writing as it gives a structure to your story.

■ Use a framework such as an Introduction, Body and Conclusion.

■ An Introduction could begin with a direct speech, action or description.

■ The Body is the ‘meat’ of the Composition such as events leading to a problem and then settles with a solution.

■ The Conclusion brings the story to a close.

It was a beautiful afternoon. The sun took time to set and everyone was excited about the big gathering that was to be held in the park later that night. The music was set up at the centre of the park and Ropate was the jokey. Some enjoyed the song while others took a swim and yet others stood up to dance. Others who weren’t doing anything just stood around. Everyone enjoyed something. Suddenly, a volleyball came and hit Ropate on the head and everyone realised a game had also started. The excitement took many forms: people forming teams, namecalling and cheering. It seemed like everyone was united now. The match ended after three hours. Everyone cheered for both the teams even if it meant calling them names. It’s sometimes interesting to realise how simple things like a game unites people and how these people, without knowing anything about each other, become one. Everyone felt the players were the stars while from where I see, the park was the star.

So, there we are! If we follow a plan and a framework, it is possible to write within what the question requires. When you practise writing, you are expressing your ideas and responding to the other ideas, telling stories and even conveying information. That will assist you to compose well-organised writing. There is no doubt that your writing ability also can be the ticket to better grades and greater academic achievement! As challenging as it might be, it is not impossible to write a good piece of composition. Writing is a skill. Just like learning a musical instrument, learning how to write well takes time and much practice. The key is to keep writing, get feedback from your teachers and write some more. There is simply no shortcut. Best wishes in your remedial activities for the exam!
